Several guidelines present methodologies and considerations for undertaking asset management in the PICs, but they do not focus specifically on coastal protection works. Similarly, several local and international publications on monitoring coastal protection works are available. However, they do not cover the wide range of engineered and non-engineered structures present in the PICs; nor address the limited resources available for monitoring and management.

This guide is intended to provide a simple yet robust method for monitoring coastal protection works in PICs—including the condition and performance of the works and their effects on the community and environment—and to recommend a decision-making framework for selecting appropriate responses.

The guide contains an Operations Manual for using the inspection forms when undertaking a basic level asset of coastal protection works in the Pacific Island countries.
