Under the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), Samoa's targets for improved water and sanitation service coverage are 94% and 100% respectively. Based on the WHO-UNICEF Joint Monitoring Program's (JMP) figures for 2008, Samoa has already met its sanitation target of universal coverage but is not on track to meet its water supply goal. A higher proportion of the population was without an improved water source in 2006 than in 1990.
