This report has been prepared for the International Development Group (IDG) of the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs. It follows a request from the New Zealand Minister of Foreign Affairs during a recent trip to Tarawa to to summarise what is known about the current state of pollution in Tarawa lagoon, the effect this has on both public and lagoon ecosystem health, and whether opening installing causeways or openings in existing causeways would improve flushing of the lagoon, and have a positive impact on both the considerable human and ecosystem health-related problems being experienced.
